NOW Foods Betaine HCl

Hydrochloric acid is a natural stomach acid that can support healthy gastric functions by maintaining normal acidity of the stomach. It is essential for the absorption of proteins, fats, calcium, iron, and Vitamin B12. Being the most common Hydrochloric acid supplement, Betaine HCL can prevent hydrochloric acid deficiency. Low hydrochloric acid levels can lead to indigestion, food allergies, and malnutrition.

Now Foods Betaine HCL can be helpful in maintaining healthy levels of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Hydrochloric acid is essential for maximum absorption of proteins and fats so it can be converted to energy the body can use. This hydrocholoric acid supplement can also be beneficial for the utilisation of calcium, iron, and Vitamin B12 obtained from the diet. Calcium benefits strong bones and teeth, iron carries oxygen in the blood and Vitamin B12 helps produce energy. Betaine HCL helps prevent Hydrocholoric acid deficiency. A condition called “hypochlorhydria” is due to low levels of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Symptoms of hypochlorhydria include bloating, heartburn after eating, nausea, food allergies, indigestion, bad breath, constipation or diarrhea, brittle finger nails, iron deficiency, recurrent yeast infections, and bacterial overgrowth. There are also diseases associated with low hydrochloric acid levels, including anemia, asthma, hepatitis, herpes, irritable bowel syndrome, acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, vitiligo, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and adrenal fatigue.

Hydrochloric acid is the natural acid produced in the stomach responsible for the digestion and absorption of proteins. It is also needed in the synthesis of the enzyme pepsin, the primary enzyme responsible for the digestion of proteins. Not just protein, fats and carbohydrates are also dependent on Hydrochloric acid for absorption. HCL is also involved in the production of secretin, a substance that stimulates the pancreas to produce the enzymes amylase, lipase, and protease. These enzymes are needed for the digestion of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins respectively. Healthy Hydrochloric acid levels also maintain the sterility of the digestive tract. Thus, Hydrochloric acid supplements can help maintain the natural digestive flora and prevent the overgrowth of harmful bacteria and fungi. Additionally, Hydrocholoric acid benefits the absorption of essential nutrients including calcium, iron, and Vitamin B12. Hyperacidity and heartburn are common digestive problems due to high levels of Hydrochloric acid.  However, Hydrochloric acid deficiency leads to a condition called hypochlorhydria. Starting the age of 35, the stomach produces less hydrochloric acid than it usually does. At the age of 50, 50% of men and women are estimated to have hypochlorhydria. Those who’ve had helicobacter pylori infections, ulcers, and who have been on long term use of protein pump inhibitor medications have increased risk of developing hypochlorhydria. Betaine HCL is the most common supplement that contains hydrochloric acid.  Betaine HCL supplements are usually combined with pepsin, for maximum protein assimilation.
